I Was Fired. And Got My Life Back

August 7, 2009 by Jonathan Fields · 5 Comments

Last month, I profiled Erik Proulx, longtime agency copywriter and creative turned founder of PleaseFeedTheAnimals.com.

In that profile, we also spoke about a very cool documentary he’d been working on, featuring people in the ad biz who’d been laid off and taken that as an opportunity to take back their lives. But, he wasn’t quite ready to go public with anything too big (or visual).

Well, today, he launched the trailer for Lemonade Movie and it rocks, so I just had to share it with you guys. Enjoy.

Want to Sell More?

June 18, 2009 by Jonathan Fields · 3 Comments

Last night, I was in a room full of social media mavens and moguls…

And, I was asked what my top book recommendations were for marketing, selling and writing compelling copy. So, I reached deep down hoping to come up with the coolest, newest, hippest, most cutting edge recommendations…but instead, I started offering up titles that ranged from 20 to 80 years old.

What gives? Simple answer. Times change, circumstances change, marketing and distribution channels change, products, services and technologies change. But, human nature has remained largely unchanged for as long as history has been recorded. And, in the end, solving, selling and marketing are fundamentally about understanding human nature, not bells and whistles.

MBA Students Take On Burnout

I’ve always wanted to turn elements of Career Renegade into a college/MBA course, but I never imagined one of my first exposures to students would be as the subject of an exam question for MBA students at a New York’s famed Baruch College.

Well, that’s exactly what happened a few weeks ago when Professor Cynthia A.Thompson, Ph.D., made this the last question on her final exam:

The Power of Putting Yourself Out There

April 14, 2009 by Jonathan Fields · 4 Comments

Sometimes we’re afraid to take a chance at revealing what we really want to do, for a variety of reasons. Maybe we think we’re not smart enough, attractive enough or properly pedigreed.

Well, here’s what can happen when we put that aside and take a chance at revealing our hidden passion to the world, even if it’s a bit later in life.

Click on the picture, you won’t be disappointed…

On Conventional Wisdom [book excerpt]

April 2, 2009 by Jonathan Fields · 3 Comments

Sharing a thought on the role of conventional wisdom from Chapter 3 of Career Renegade:

For the Career Renegade, conventional wisdom is actually a great asset. It thins the herd of competitors, leaving only those who choose to blaze their own path, rather than follow another’s. It creates space for those who lead with passion to truly shine.

Your first challenge is to understand this, to see conventional wisdom as simply the first of many tests, the collective presumptions of other people who have not been able to succeed in their own quests. Or, even more likely, a reflection of an unwillingness to ever try. Know this, accept it. Then resolve to move beyond it.

The Sky’s Falling, You Want an Umbrella or A Bucket?

I’ve been saying it for months. Strike that, years

There’s no such thing as a one-sided coin…

If something’s going down, something else must be going up. And, for Career Renegades, that means opportunity.

Example #1 – health & Healing

In NYC after 9-11, while many businesses crashed, health and healing businesses soared. I know firsthand, having launched one of those businesses weeks after 9-11. My company not only helped contribute to the process of healing, but built a real, vibrant community and substantial stream of revenue. In fact, it’s now one of the top yoga studios in the Northeast and has served nearly 20,000 students and trained hundreds of teachers.

Black Violin Goes Renegade On Stage

March 23, 2009 by Jonathan Fields · 2 Comments

We were forty five minutes into a mind blowing performance by Black Violin at The New Victory Theater in NYC, when the stars, Kev Marcus and Wil-B, brought the show to a halt to talk to the kids. Here’s (paraphrased) what Kev shared with the packed house…

We’ve been playing violin since 5th an 8th grade, but we’re not the best violinists at all. We’ve toured the world, been on stage with Alicia Keyes, Kanye, Nas, Mike Shinoda, P Diddy and none of them were the best singers. But, we’ve all done two things, we’ve outworked everyone around us and we’ve thought outside the box. That’s what it takes to succeed. Work harder than anyone else and don’t just do what everyone else does, do it differently.

You WILL Mess Up, Get Over It!

A life spent making mistakes is not only more honorable, but more useful than a life spent doing nothing. -George Bernard Shaw

Simple fact…you’re going to mess up, make mistakes, hurt others and get hurt. Big ones, little ones, ones you can fix and others you can’t.

Unless…you do nothing.

I’ve had so many people ask me, over the last few years…

What if I make the wrong choice? What if do something I thought I really wanted to do, then find out I either didn’t want to do it or was going about it the wrong way?”
