Basecamp Renegade: 3 Days That Will Change Everything
August 24, 2009 by Jonathan Fields · Comments Off

I’ve been keeping something from you guys for a few months now…
It’s an insanely cool event called Basecamp Renegade and it’s going down in Charlotte, NC on September 25-27th. And, because I can’t do anything the way I’m supposed to, it’s not in a conference room or hotel. It’s in a 200 acre man made outdoor adventure center called the U.S. National Whitewater Center.

For 2 1/2 days, me and Olympic Gold Medal whitewater kayaker, Joe Jacobi, are going to guide a mini-tribe of 25 people through the whitewater, mountainbiking, rock climbing, zip lining, renegade lifestyle and career transformation experience of a lifetime.

When Pain Doesn’t Get You Money
August 17, 2009 by Jonathan Fields · 12 Comments
I was recently watching TV when a commercial came on for a law firm with the slogan:
If You Have Pain, You Need Law
My jaw dropped. I was really bothered.
First, at the law firm. And then at society at large. Because this commercial, sadly, reflected a growing and in my mind somewhat perverse expectation (at least in the U.S.) that if you get hurt someone’s gotta pay…even if it was nobody else’s fault
Even if it was YOUR fault!
Whatever happened to personal responsibility?
F2 | Fire Fly Manifesto: Remixed – It’s Alive
August 12, 2009 by Jonathan Fields · Comments Off
On November 20, 2008, I released the original Fire Fly Manifesto as a catalyst to change the conversation from one of despair to one of hope. I was blown away by the worldwide reception.
In the 9 months since its release, though, both the economic climate and the mood throughout the world have changed in a fairly profound way.
And, again, I felt the need to revise and expand the Fire Fly Manifesto to address the questions that were being asked of me and the challenges that lie ahead. Things like, “should I really be thinking about starting my own adventure in this economy?” Or, “can I really go renegade if I’ve just lost my job?”
Don’t Make Me Pay to Hear You Pitch

So, I recently asked the twittersphere for recommendations for a contact management app for professional offices and solopreneurs. A bunch of different options were repeated often enough for me to check them out. And, 37 Signals’ HighriseHQ and NetSuite CRM were among that group
The first thing I did was go to each website to learn more. And, without even diving into the details of the apps, I was taken aback by a very impactful difference in the marketing sequence that immediately said one vendor gets it and the other doesn’t.
Here’s what I saw when I clicked over to the HighriseHQ website:
I Was Fired. And Got My Life Back
August 7, 2009 by Jonathan Fields · 5 Comments
Last month, I profiled Erik Proulx, longtime agency copywriter and creative turned founder of PleaseFeedTheAnimals.com.
In that profile, we also spoke about a very cool documentary he’d been working on, featuring people in the ad biz who’d been laid off and taken that as an opportunity to take back their lives. But, he wasn’t quite ready to go public with anything too big (or visual).
Well, today, he launched the trailer for Lemonade Movie and it rocks, so I just had to share it with you guys. Enjoy.

Why Small is the New Big in Social Media Marketing
August 4, 2009 by Jonathan Fields · 31 Comments
It’s social media’s David and Goliath story. And, it’s all about ROI…
Scenario #1 MegaCo.
An international consumer goods company is looking to explore new ways to market it’s product in a tough economy. They learn about this new social media/Wed 2.0 thing and, even though the people in legal are massively freaked out about employees running around, talking smack and causing potential PR debacles, they give the okay for marketing to “explore” social media.
