Would You Walk Away From Your Job for $100,000?
April 24, 2009 by Jonathan Fields · 19 Comments
Earlier this week, I posed the following question on twitter…

Within seconds, answers came flooding in. You can find them all individually by just searching on twitter, but, I thought it’d be valuable to aggregate and a share a sampling of replies here on the blog, too, because it really shows the diversity of mindset that’s out there today.
And, amazingly, a full 45% said…no, they’d walk away from the money. I sometimes wonder what that says about people on twitter (or who follow me) versus, those in the “general population.”

The Real Reason Companies are Terrified of Social Media
April 22, 2009 by Jonathan Fields · 24 Comments
I was recently presenting at a conference in NYC, where the following question was asked…
What do you tell employers who are freaked out about their employees developing their own personal brand on social media, instead of the company’s?
Look, I get the tension.
As interactive platforms give employees the ability to build their own reputations and communities and demonstrate value outside the purview of their employers, companies are getting freaked about employees gaining too much “hand.”
Here’s my short answer to companies…GET OVER IT!
What Sells Better: Hope, Fear or Susan Boyle?
April 20, 2009 by Jonathan Fields · 12 Comments

I was just finishing off Martin Lindstrom’s fascinating book on neuromarketing, Buyology, when a friend forwarded me a link to the now famous Susan Boyle, who took Britain’s Got Talent and then the world by storm last week.
Apparently the video of her performance was viewed on Youtube more than 20 million times in 48 hours, making it the fastest and biggest viral video in YouTube’s history. I watched and cheered, as did the audience.
Then, something hit me…
Job Hunting Secret: Get Relevant or Go Home
April 16, 2009 by Jonathan Fields · 1 Comment
Ever wonder what the best way to get a resume read or an interviewer immediately interested in you is?
Okay, well, there’s a simple lesson, drawn from the world of internet marketing, more specifically, pay per click advertising that’ll put you miles above everyone else who graces the resume slush pile or the interview chair.
What’s the secret?
Relevance!
For those who don’t know what pay-per-click is, it’s the little ads you see on the side of a google search page. Advertisers post those ads and then pay every time someone clicks on one. Rule of thumb—the more relevant an ad is to what a person is searching on, the more likely they are to click on it.

Here’s an odd bit of advice coming from me…get offline!
Every week, my in-box is jammed with people offering:

- Electronic, exotic, erotic, exogenous, extraterrestrial, interactive, proactive, radioactive, radio-controlled, hyper-kinetic, self-actualizing, hybrid on/offline intergalactic symposia…
All in an effort to sell small business owners, private practice owners and solopreneurs some kind of product or service that’ll teach them how to market their businesses online. And, I agree, there are few, if any, businesses that won’t benefit from getting online. But, there’s a big problem…
